Entrance Matting in Hospitality

Guests judge a hotel or restaurant before they reach the front desk. The entrance is where that judgement starts, and it is also where rain, grit and luggage wheels do the most damage.

Entrance matting in hospitality has to do two jobs at once. It must protect the floor, and the people crossing it, from dirt and moisture. It must also look like it belongs in the building.

This guide explains how to plan a hotel entrance or any hospitality entrance, from layered systems and product types to revolving doors, branding, safety and installation. It draws on real COBA Flooring projects at hotels, a steakhouse, shopping centres and venues. With Christmas bringing wetter weather and heavier footfall, now is a good time to check your entrance is ready.

Why the hospitality entrance matters

The entrance is the first thing guests see and the first floor they walk on. A tired mat says something about your standards before anyone says hello.

At Gillray’s Steakhouse, the existing matting had worn out and no longer matched the quality of the restaurant. Thousands of guests pass through those doors every week, so the problem was visible daily.

It is also one of the hardest-working floors you own. Every guest, delivery and team member crosses it, usually carrying water, grit or luggage.

  • It sets the first impression for the whole venue.
  • It takes some of the heaviest wear in the building.
  • It is the main route for dirt and water into your interior.

What entrance matting does in a hospitality setting

Good entrance matting works in four ways.

  1. Removes dirt and moisture. Scraping and absorbing at the door stops both spreading across the lobby.
  2. Reduces slip risk. Wet footwear on polished stone or tile is a familiar hazard. Matting captures water before guests reach hard flooring.
  3. Protects interior flooring. Grit wears timber, stone and carpet. Catching it at the door extends the life of the floors behind it.
  4. Cuts cleaning effort. Dirt held in a mat is vacuumed from one place instead of mopped across the whole reception area.

A Liverpool One shopping centre site shows what happens when matting fails. The old mat had started to lift, creating a trip hazard, and it was no longer removing dirt or moisture. COBA replaced it urgently with a closed-construction PLAN® A system.

Hospitality entrance types and what each needs

A hotel entrance is not one problem. Different doors, guests and trading patterns call for different matting.

Shopping centres and attractions matter here too. Many hospitality venues sit inside them, and they face the same Christmas surge in wet, heavy footfall.

Building a layered walk-off system

One mat rarely does the whole job. The most effective hotel entrances use two or more stages, each doing something different.

  1. Scraper zone. Hard-wearing inserts at or just inside the door scrape coarse dirt and grit from shoes.
  2. Absorbing zone. A carpet-style insert then picks up finer dirt and moisture before guests reach the lobby floor.

The Copthorne Hotel in Dudley shows the principle. Under the revolving door, COBA fitted PLAN® A open construction with PVC scrapers. In the walk-off area, it used closed construction with Alba Blue inserts. The two layers protect the entrance in poor weather, and daily vacuuming keeps them working.

Length matters as well. The more steps a guest takes on matting, the more dirt and water it removes. A site survey will confirm how much matting your layout needs.

Entrance matting types compared

COBA’s entrance matting systems fall into a few families. The right one depends on door type, matwell depth, traffic and how quickly you need it fitted.

Durability under trolleys matters in hotels, where guests arrive with luggage. At Barnsley Interchange, COBA’s Premier tiles removed moisture and debris from wheeled trolleys without buckling. That is useful evidence for any entrance with luggage or service carts.

Revolving doors and awkward layouts

Revolving doors are the hardest hotel entrance to mat well. Matwells are often shallow, and motor housings and curved shapes leave little room for error.

At Novotel London Paddington, thousands of daily footfalls had worn out the old revolving-door mat. COBA chose PLAN® A Low Profile with Alba Grey inserts to suit the shallower matwell. Errors under a revolving door are costly, so the installation team’s product knowledge was part of the solution.

The approach repeated at the BBC Earth Experience, where PLAN® A Low Profile went into a matwell fitted to the revolving door. At the Copthorne, the Alba Blue inserts were colour-matched to the FAAC doors.

Before you specify, check three things:

  • Matwell depth and shape.
  • Door friction and draught clearance.
  • Whether the surveyor has measured the final door position.
