Hotel Entrance Mats: How the Right Entrance Matting Protects First Impressions

Copthorne Hotel Entrance Matting in Revolving Door

First impressions are everything in hospitality and nowhere is that truer than the moment a guest steps through your door. COBA Flooring offers a wide range of hotel entrance mats and entrance flooring systems designed to protect busy reception foyers from dirt, moisture and wear, while still looking every bit as polished as the rest of your foyer.

From bespoke aluminium entrance matting systems built to withstand high volume footfall and wheeled luggage, to cost-effective modular tile solutions for tighter budgets, our range covers every stage of a hotel entrance, and every level of investment.

Why Hotels Need a Proper Entrance Matting Solution

Dirt walked in from outside is bad for business. It makes a foyer look unkempt, it wears floors out prematurely, and in wet weather it makes hard flooring dangerously slippery underfoot. Most hoteliers don’t think about entrance matting until one of these problems shows up: a reception floor that looks grubby by midday, a slip risk near the door, or an expensive floor finish that’s started to wear through.

All of these are avoidable with the correct entrance matting in place. Our team helps hotels choose the right combination based on footfall volume, the type of traffic moving through (guests, luggage trolleys, wheelchairs), and whether the entrance needs an outdoor stage, an indoor stage, or both.

For the most effective protection against dirt, moisture and snow, we typically recommend an outdoor mat that captures the worst of it from shoe soles before guests reach the lobby, paired with an indoor system that finishes the job. Moulded, bevelled edges on our matting also support smooth wheelchair access while helping to prevent trip hazards.

PLAN® A: Our Flagship Aluminium Entrance Matting

For busy city centre and airport hotels, our PLAN® A aluminium entrance matting system is the natural first choice. It’s COBA Flooring’s best-selling entrance matting solution, and for good reason: an aluminium rail system linked with flexible joints gives it the durability to cope with heavy to very heavy traffic entrances, day after day.

PLAN® A is genuinely made to order in the UK and can be tailored with a wide choice of surface inserts, including carpet, brushes and scrapers, so you can match cleaning performance to the environment and finish to the design of your foyer. A bespoke logo can also be inlaid directly into the system, which is a popular choice with hotel chains looking to reinforce their brand from the very first step. While every system is manufactured bespoke to order, turnaround is normally just three to five days, and we can provide a full templating service alongside installation through our nationwide network of flooring contractors.

We recently supplied PLAN® A for a revolving door entrance and matching walk-off matting at the Copthorne Hotel in Dudley, where a two-layer system was specified to give guests protection right from the revolving door through to reception. PLAN® A Modular: The Same Quality, Built for Flexibility

For hotels that need the performance of an aluminium system but with easier future adaptability, PLAN® A Modular offers a tile-based take on the PLAN® A construction. Rather than one continuous made-to-measure system, the modular format allows sections to be lifted and replaced individually, which is useful for hotels managing refurbishment in phases or wanting to minimise disruption if a section needs attention down the line. It keeps the same robust build quality and insert options guests expect from PLAN® A, in a configuration that’s easier to adapt as your entrance evolves.

Halo: A Stylish Step Up for Statement Entrances

Where a hotel entrance calls for something with extra visual impact, our Halo matting range is designed to combine strong dirt and moisture control with a more refined finish, well suited to boutique hotels and lobby areas where design is as important as performance. As with the rest of our range, our team can talk you through the right specification for your footfall levels and design brief.

Premier Track: Fast, Affordable Refresh for Busy Lobbies

If an aluminium system is beyond budget, or you simply need a quick refresh with minimal disruption, Premier Track tiles are one of our most popular value-engineered entrance matting solutions. They’re known for their durability, ease of maintenance and clean, professional appearance, and because they’re interlocking tiles, they don’t require a matwell, which speeds up installation considerably.

This was exactly the brief at the Holiday Inn Luton, where the entrance area had started to look tired but the hotel couldn’t afford lengthy downtime. Our installation partner had the site assessed and the new Premier Track matting fitted within a week of the initial enquiry, transforming the look of the entrance with barely any impact on guests or staff. Choosing the Right Entrance Matting for Your Hotel

Size matters as much as material. Guests rarely pause to wipe their feet, and a mat that’s too short simply won’t have done its job before they’re back on your lobby floor. The general rule: the more times someone steps on the mat (ideally at least three full steps per foot), the more dirt and moisture it removes before it ever reaches your interior flooring.

  • Standard door mats start at 60cm x 90cm, suitable for smaller interior doorways rather than a main entrance
  • For large hotel entrances, look at a minimum of 90cm x 150cm, and longer for higher footfall
  • Rubber-backed mats tend to offer greater durability, flexibility and slip resistance on smooth floors, though at a higher price point

We also stock plush, fire-resistant options for hotels wanting a more luxurious feel at the door, though these are better suited to lower-traffic areas than main entrances, where a hard-wearing system like PLAN® A or Premier Track will perform better under sustained footfall.

Easy to Maintain, Built to Last

Every product in our hotel entrance matting range is designed with cleaning in mind. Most simply need regular vacuuming to lift dirt and debris once any moisture has dried, and many of our tile and modular systems can be cleaned individually rather than requiring the whole entrance to be out of action. Larger barrier matting can be cleaned with a commercial carpet cleaner where needed.

Right Mat, Every Time

Our entrance matting is sourced from ISO-accredited suppliers and every product undergoes rigorous stress testing before it reaches your hotel. Whether you’re planning a full refurbishment with a bespoke PLAN® A system or a fast, low-disruption Premier Track refresh, our team can help you specify the right hotel entrance mat for your footfall, budget and design.
